Club History

History of Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club and JAG Management Group

Greenwood Athletic Club started as a concept in 1985 as a project of the John Madden Company, the founder’s of Greenwood Plaza. While under design the John Madden Company partnered with Maricor, which was a “for-profit” division of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver. This partnership was a collaboration between the entrepreneurial skills of an acclaimed real estate developer and the health care expertise of a reputable hospital organization.
 
After a 12-month design period, ground broke on August 20, 1986 and we opened Greenwood Athletic Club with 2,000 memberships on July 1, 1987. Since opening, GAC has been revered as one of the industry-leading clubs. From the very beginning, GAC positioned itself for excellence. We retained the renowned Dr. Kenneth Cooper of the internationally acclaimed Cooper Clinic in Dallas Texas as a health and fitness consultant which allowed us to establish an immediate reputation for quality of service and a high focus on health and fitness.

GAC had a vast membership growth in the first five years of its existence. We grew from the original 2,000 memberships to over 4,000. With this growth, our services and programs expanded accordingly. We realized that with our surge in membership that we needed to expand our facilities and ultimately added over 5,000 square feet to our building, bringing GAC to 85,000 square feet.

Over the years, GAC has ebbed and flowed with the evolution of the industry and the needs of membership and the upgrading trend has since been a regular part of our operational formula. We have responded to member needs and market demands by adding seven indoor clay tennis courts in a fully air conditioned and award winning tennis club in 1995. The main club has been through several remodels and ongoing upgrades (both interior and exterior) to remain vital and prepared to exceed the expectations of membership. The most comprehensive remodel was completed in February 2002.

In an effort to keep GAC as a market leader, the ownership completed a conversion of their equity into publicly held bonds. In March of 2005, the Greenwood Athletic Club Metropolitan District was formed. The reasons for this were multiple, but it is the results that are most important. Greenwood Athletic Club continues to operate exactly as it had before. It remains privately operated and managed by JAG Management Group, LLC, which is owned by J. Madden, the founding owner and managing partner of Greenwood Athletic Club. JAG Management Group ensures seamless management protocols with the same professional and quality employees to ensure optimal performance and continuity.

As we always have, JAG embraces the same commitment to the full ideals of a healthy lifestyle and enhanced quality of life through regular fitness. JAG, on behalf of GAC, works very hard to constantly improve and to learn more about addressing the needs of our customers and staff. To remain a leader in the fitness industry takes hard work and dedication to being the best.

On July 1, 2006, Greenwood Athletic Club’s 19th Anniversary, we transformed and expanded our aquatics area to 32,000 total square feet and added  three new and beautiful outdoor pools, including an adult-only leisure pool, youth splash pool with fountains, sprays and a slide, and a six-lane 25-meter heated lap pool that remains open year around with heated decks.

The end of 2006 and beginning of 2007 sparked a re-branding of the club with a name change to Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club (GATC) and the development of a new vision, mission, goals and core values. In 2008 we followed up with yet another remodel (9,600 square foot weight room) and the addition of 4,800 square feet to the club bringing the new total to 90,000 square feet.

In October 2011, Greenwood added an 11,000 square foot addition to the original building bringing the total square footage of the athletic club to 101,000 square feet. The expansion offers a unique Pilates Studio open to the public with private training, classes and teacher training. A Combat Zone Martial Arts Studio featuring Mixed Martial Arts training for adults and children by black belt instructors and professional fighters, a dedicated Barre Studio (also open to non-members) and a new 2,000 square foot climate-controlled yoga studio for heated and non-heated classes.

The 1,650 square foot Combat Zone is a professional Martial Arts Studio offering Mixed Martial Art programs including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Filipino Kali, USBA Boxing Instruction, Junior Boxing, Kids Kickboxing, Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Knock-Out conditioning training. The Combat Zone features 10 full size kickboxing bags, a partial MMA Cage by TapouT® and a fully matted floor. Programs will be offered to non-members and recreational reimbursement will also be available to residents from the cities of Greenwood Village and Cherry Hills Village.

The new 2,750 square foot Pilate’s studio has its own private entrance. Non-members and members have access to the fully equipped studio. The Pilates Studio at Greenwood offers classes such as reformer, chair and tower, Pilates Stick and MVe® classes.

The 2,000 square foot yoga studio has heated floors, a dedicated heat and humidity system for Thermal Yoga, and three lighting options. Lastly, there is an 860 square foot personalized studio for small groups and Greenwood Barre classes.

GATC maintains one of the most loyal memberships in the business. We continue to be recognized as one of the elite full service athletic clubs in the business. It is a constant effort to refine our skills, satisfy our customer’s, maintain the highest levels of programming, keep our staff fulfilled, and make sure that our facilities are always fresh.
